Envisioning the Future: Global South Communities Chart Their Path Forward

Futures Series Session

NEAR’s Future Series brings together talented and passionate local leaders to imagine a future where communities in the Global South have the resources and agency to tackle their most pressing challenges without relying on the current aid system. NEAR’s cohort of 20 leaders meets monthly from June-October.

Community Visions of the Future

In June, these leaders engaged their communities to learn about, “What future they want to see in 50 years?” We received their hopes in the form of plans, poems, and images. Below are some examples from Venture Association- Al Mobader in Lebanon:

Our Path Toward a Green Future

By Hanin Dames, Helper

“It’s a vision of a world where cities are built not just from concrete, but from the values of solidarity, environmental justice, and community independence.”

When the Future Began to Look Like Us

By Najieh Loubani, Center Supervisor

We didn’t wait for the world to come fix us.

We fixed ourselves.

We turned rubble into walls, tears into rivers of nourishment.

We were no longer labeled as "beneficiaries," but as creators—

Creators of life, architects of a new system.

Shared Values

Though these future visions are unique to each person and context, a few shared values have emerged:

  • Collaboration for solutions, not competition for resources

  • Global South resources mobilised first

  • Decentralised power

  • Inclusion and amplification of grassroots, local, and traditionally excluded voices

  • Transparency and accountability

  • Conservation and regeneration

  • Natural, cultural, and ancestral wisdom

  • Technology for care

What if we design a new system of solidarity rooted in these values?

When we met as a cohort in July, we used these shared values to prioritise the focus of our work along the three key design questions below:

  • How might communities across the Global South share information and coordinate resources amongst themselves without relying on the Global North?

  • How might the Global South develop and export new, ethical technologies that are used globally to save lives, connect people, and protect our planet?

  • How might grassroots leaders from local communities across the Global South guide policy and funding decisions at the national and international levels?

What’s Next?

In August, the cohort will gather to map out potential pathways to create a bridge  from our present reality to a future where these prioritised visions are true across the Global South.

We’d love to hear from you!

Share your top ideas for how we can work toward our future vision of solidarity, sustainability, and self-reliance.

Future Series: Update from 7 July 2025

Overview

The NEAR community is working to transform the aid sector - not just reset or reform. To do that, we are tapping into the wisdom, vision, and creativity of our members and building on the work of our network to reimagine the future through the lens of local leadership, self-reliance, sustainability, and solidarity. We kicked off on 18 June, and over the next few months, we will gather a cohort of NEAR members to explore problems, imagine new solutions, and map a pathway forward.

Our cohort is made up of representatives from 20 NEAR member organisations.

  • Regional representation: 5 MENA, 7 Africa, 4 Asia Pacific, 4 Latin America and Caribbean;

  • 60% are women;

  • 50% are emerging leaders, aged 35 or younger;

  • 20% identify as belonging to historically underrepresented groups

During the kickoff, we got to know each other by sharing personal stories of times when we’ve experienced solidarity– drawing inspiration from our families, neighbours, and faith communities to help illustrate a shared definition for solidarity.

Then we embarked on an exercise of radical imagination where we envisioned the world we want to see in 50 years, unconstrained by the realities of our current systems. We imagined new technologies that prioritised connection and collective care, decisions and structures rooted in ancestral and natural wisdom, and young people leading all along the way.

From these exercises and the surrounding discussions, there emerged a set of principles that will guide our work together over the next few months. During this series, we’ll develop solutions and recommendations for how the NEAR community can move toward a system grounded in solidarity and influence the larger sector to do the same.

We’ll continue to update this page with summaries from our workshops and invitations to all NEAR members to share your own ideas and insights.

Imagine the world 50 years in the future

What is the future you want to see, where communities across the Global South have the resources and agency to address the challenges that impact them– without relying on our current aid system?

  • What does it look like?

  • How do communities get what they need?

  • How are people working together and showing up for each other– both locally and across borders?

  • What new technology exists in this future that helps build solidarity and cooperation?
